PRESS RELEASE: Philadelphia’s premier all-female tap company, The Lady Hoofers Tap Ensemble, is pleased to present their annual spring concert “On Tap” on May 4, 2019 at the Performance Garage. The 60-minute family-friendly concert will include the return of audience favorites plus the premiere of three new works by Artistic Director Kat Richter, First Company member emeritus Becky Mastin, and guest choreographer Michele Dunleavy.
“Past, Presence, Future,” by Michele Dunleavy, features six dancers in an exploration of "presence." She currently serves as Associate Professor of Dance at Pennsylvania State University where she works in a variety of dance forms, and her choreography has been presented in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, NYC, and Chicago. In addition to performing her own work, she has danced with Kompitus Rhythm Collective, Pittsburgh Opera, Junction Dance Theatre, and others. Dunleavy says of the newly commissioned work: “navigating the stressors of modern day life can make us feel as though we are being pulled in a million different directions simultaneously. In addition, we regularly engage in a form of mental 'time travel' whereby we ruminate on past events and/or project future narratives rather than live in the present moment.” Through her choreography, Dunleavy asks dancers and audience members alike to consider where, when, and with whom we are most fully present.
Artistic Director Kat Richter will present “Take the 'A' Train,” a company premiere originally commissioned by Stockton University “I’ve always loved the music of Duke Ellington,” says Richter, “and audiences will love the familiar tunes. First Company member emeritus Becky Mastin also adds to the repertoire with a new work set to Nina Simone’s “Love Me or Leave Me” showcasing a quartet of dancers shifting seamlessly between dancing in unison and in complex, four way polyrhythms.
